Breaking Barriers: How Syed Nisa Became the First Kalash Woman Footballer

Kalash Valley, Pakistan – In a society where women’s roles have long been confined to household chores, Syed Nisa, a young Kalash woman, is shattering stereotypes—one football goal at a time. Hailing from the breathtaking Kalash Valley, Nisa is Pakistan’s first female footballer from her community, inspiring a new generation of girls to chase their dreams.

From Household Chores to Football Fields: Syed Nisa’s Inspiring Journey

A Life Transformed by Football

Growing up in Bamburet, one of the three Kalash villages, Nisa’s daily routine mirrored that of most Kalash women—fetching water, farming, weaving, and caring for livestock. Sports, especially football, were considered strictly for men—until 2018, when her sister showed her a video of Karishma Ali, Chitral’s pioneering female footballer.

“I was shocked,” Nisa recalls. “I didn’t even know girls from Chitral could play sports.”
That moment ignited her passion, leading her to become the first Kalash woman to pursue football professionally.
Today, she plays for Chitral Women’s Sports Club and her university team while pursuing a Master’s degree.

Fighting Societal Norms & Family Resistance

Nisa’s journey was far from easy. In a conservative society where girls are expected to focus on studies and domestic duties, her decision to play football was met with backlash.

“People said sports aren’t for girls,” she shares. “Even my family hesitated at first.”
With her elder sister’s support and her own unshakable determination, she persisted.
Her father, Wazir, initially worried about “log kya kahenge” (what will people say) but later became her biggest supporter.

“I’ve seen her strength and passion,” Wazir says. “She’s changing how our community views women.”

Mentorship & the Karishma Ali Foundation

A turning point came in 2019, when Nisa met Karishma Ali, Pakistan’s renowned female footballer and founder of the Karishma Ali Foundation (KAF).

“I saw a spark in her,” Karishma says. “She has the power to break barriers.”
Through KAF, Nisa received training, mentorship, and opportunities to compete.
She also inspired 14 other Kalash girls to join football—though only four continued due to societal pressures.

How Football is Empowering Kalash Women

Building Confidence & Leadership

Football has transformed Nisa’s life beyond the field:
“I didn’t know my rights before—now I speak up confidently.”
“Sports made me strong mentally and physically.”
“I want to represent Pakistan internationally.”

Changing Mindsets in Kalash Valley

Nisa’s success is slowly shifting perceptions in her community:
She now conducts football sessions for young Kalash girls.
Parents who once opposed sports are now encouraging their daughters.
“If girls get opportunities, they’ll stay connected to their culture,” Nisa says.

A Message to the World

Nisa’s story proves that one bold step can change everything:
“No dream is too big. Take that first step, stay loyal to your goal, and never give up.”
